Opinion: Which Is Bigger, Marvel’s The Avengers or Skyfall?
The year 2012 has ended, but it doesn’t mean things are forgotten. From Gangnam Style to Kony 2012 to Curiosity landing on Mars, a variety of events happened in 2012. Aside from all those things, the box office was also pretty interesting back in that year. Some of the biggest movies include The Dark Knight Rises and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, both of which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. But the top two movies were Marvel’s The Avengers and Skyfall. So let’s talk about these two using domestic (North America) and worldwide gross based on data from Box Office Mojo.
Marvel’s The Avengers is a movie that united some of Marvel’s superheroes, that is Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), against Loki (Tom Hiddleston) who is given a task to lead the Chitauri to invade the earth. The movie grossed around $623 million domestically and a whopping $1.5 billion worldwide.
On the other hand, Skyfall is a spy movie. There is no superhero in this movie—just hero. Skyfall is the 23rd James Bond film and the third to star Daniel Craig as Bond. In the movie, Bond's faith in M (Judi Dench) is tested. It also stars Javier Bardem as Raoul Silva, the movie's antagonist. It eventually grossed over $300 million domestically and just over $1.1 billion worldwide.
While the $400 million difference is obviously significant, a number of factors caused this to happen. First of all, The Avengers isn't just any superhero movie—it's the combination of superheroes, after those Phase 1 movies, and so it attracted more people, even the ones who didn't know any of these heroes (including me). Although James Bond was arguably more popular than The Avengers, Skyfall is just another movie. Non-fans might not want to watch it (but I did).
Secondly, Skyfall was released without 3D. Although today 3D may sound like a gimmick, it does have a contribution to the movie's final gross. Also, well-reviewed movie usually gets more 3D percentage. So I predict Skyfall should have 30 percent 3D percentage at the very least. I cannot predict true Skyfall final gross, though, as 3D varies in price. The U.S. average for a 3D ticket may be around $10 or more, but where I live it's only around $5.
The reviews for both movies were damn good. Skyfall has 92 percent Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Avengers also has 94 fresh rating. Both movies also had strong word-of-mouth. So this factor should not be a big contributor to the movies' eventual gross.
With all the aforementioned factors, The Avengers raked in $1.5 billion. My prediction is that Skyfall ($1.1 billion) should at least gross $1.3 billion to as much as $1.6 billion. But to be precise, I predict Skyfall would gross around $1.45 billion (and yes, that's the average of minimum and maximum gross prediction); meaning that The Avengers would still be bigger than Skyfall by a relatively small margin. This could not exactly be a reality, because I am hardly a movie-savvy, but there goes my prediction. What do you think?
